I’m doing an online course on The Magician Archetype this Thursday 6pm. Link here. 6-8pm UK 1-3pm NY 10am-12 LA. It’s pay what you want!
Wizard. Sage. Sorcerer. Witch. Mystic. In the old days, these supernatural powers were attributed to God. These days they’re associated with Quantum Physics. Both interpretations have their light and shade (as do all the archetypes). Both suffer from an overassociation with identity - even Corporate consultants are now referring to themselves as Wizards or Business alchemists. And as for spiritual Gurus, you can’t do a quick website scroll without being bombarded by magical adjectives.
On the one hand, we have access to more power than we previously believed. On the other hand, we’re more likely than ever to be seduced by brands that seem to represent that power. When we search for transformation in the external world, there’s always a price to pay - think of what the Little Mermaid had to give the big purple Spin Doctor in exchange for those long, wobbly legs.
What we love about magicians is their charisma, and that’s a soul quality rather than an ego one. If we marry the magician to the mystic their creative energy becomes Fierce Love… the kind of love that can elevate consciousness, rather than pull a rabbit from a hat.
Though rabbits are always a welcome addition to any party.
